The personal learning network for educators
I am an elementary teacher with a student enrolled in my upcoming fall class who is diagnosed with reactive attachment disorder. Has anyone had experience with students diagnosed with RAD? I'm looking for any tips or suggestions to help make the year as positive as possible for this student and the entire class (and me too!). Thanks!

Hi,
From my experiences my suggestions are to create firm boundaries and very clear expectations, build a positive relationship with the student by taking interest in their interests, showing real concern, care and love. If the student becomes agitated give them thinking time and try not to react (you keep calm). I have also found that if the student feel trapped (within four walls or a small space they can react as well). Good luck and remember to have fun :)
