I feel like I'm living in the 80's in my classroom! How can ONE lone teacher go about getting a smartboard put into their classroom? Are there places out there that would donate one to the classroom? I'm in desperate need of this - I use the computer (which still is not wireless) and projector everyday! Help...anyone?
Have you put together a request at DonorsChoose? donorschoose.org ...
If you have a whiteboard, the Mimio is all you need (MUCH cheaper). http://www.mimio.com/index.asp
Maybe approaching your admin and asking to pilot a smartboard classroom where you could demonstrate the benefits of the Smartboard in the classroom. Approaching local businesses and corporations to donate funds is another option as well. Casey mentioned another interesting alternative as well with the mimio. However if you are really technically minded you can build an interactive whiteboard using a wii remote and some supplies from your local radio shack. There are instructions on Google. Costs considerably less than even a mimio.
Shawn - Smart Technologies offers a few funding options http://smarterkids.org/k12/index.asp
Hope one of these options is a good fit for your classroom. Also, check with the Smart Technologies rep in your area. I have found them to be extremely helpful and accommodating.

Hi Shawn, I just got introduced to an IWB that's a whole lot cheaper ($1600 if you have the projector and laptop already) and doesn't require proprietary software--Eno. I got to play with it at a conference I went to last week and LOVED it. But I've never used a smart board so I can't compare. Also check out digitalwish.org and see what you might find there. Good luck!
I would, definitely, look into Mimio. Our school gets them for $530 which includes the wireless setup. Since you already have the projector, you'd be up and running in no time for a very reasonable price. Our teachers love them!
Thanks everyone - I'm really interested in trying one of the grants to see what happens. It's really frustrating sometimes to know that there are so many possibilities with technology and its uses, and I have to continuously plead to get them in my classroom!
