The personal learning network for educators

I am a 5th grade teacher. I am one of the first in my grade level to get an iPad. I am looking for suggestions on iPad applications other 5th grade teachers are currently using in the classroom. I am especially interested in ways I can use my iPad for students reading below grade level.

Tanya, I was given an iPad (1) last summer, followed by an iTunes gift card and the encouragement to try out apps. It's been an interesting journey thus far. We have an iPad initiative at our school, but, thus far, it does not require use of iPads by fifth graders. Beginning next year, however, an iPad will be required for each student beginning in grade 6. We are exploring how use by fifth graders will fit into this initiative.

Here's what I've found - some apps are better than others (no surprise there). A few free apps are gems, but it seems to me that for 0.99 or 1.99 there's a significant increase in quality. The device itself is highly engaging to nearly all students. I have found more math and science apps of value than reading. Perhaps others who read these posts will offer suggestions we can both use!

Reading a book on an iPad (or Kindle or Nook) seems easier for many students. The font can be sized for the reader's preferences, and the interface seems to focus kids. The Kindle and Nook don't have glare (or other distracting apps, generally speaking), so are easier on the eyes.

What grade do you teach? What are the math and science apps you like the best?

I got a grant for seven iPads for my special ed students.  WE will be using them to create group and individual digital stories, create wikis to collaborate on non fiction expository writing.  I also want students to try to use Prezi for presentations.

Daycare or Preschool: Which Is Better for Your Child

If you are trying to decide which one you should choose for your child, first look at your child's abilities. Would they be better suited for a preschool environment where they can explore and learn, or would they do better in a less structured environment like a daycare? Visit a few of each and see just what kind of activities they include. This may be the one best way to determine which one is right for your child.Read more here:…See More

Use these two words and become a better student

Words are powerful. And you do not only know that since your last exam. A single word can change everything: it can make you the victor, save relationships, calm you down or pull you into the abyss.Finding the right words is an art that not everyone masters. Some use their words inflationary and put one empty phrase to the next. Others put every word on the gold scale and interpret everything possible into what is said. But your choice of words not only affects how other people perceive you. Your…See More

Online Education: Can It Really Replace Learning in Classrooms?

In the modern world education is a part of everyone's life. Even if someone did not graduate from college or finish school, they still learn new skills or just something they are interested in. That can likewise be called education, or, even a more appropriate term is self-education. This concept is closely related to…See More
