The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

Hi, I was in a conversation with an online administrator yesterday and we were talking about curriculum development.

Is you school buying classes from somewhere else, or developing them specific to your school?

Just curious what is happening out in the world these days :)

At our school, we have developed all of our own courses and we change them to be in sync with our ground school or whenever we want to update them with new course content or new technologies.

Hi Diane,

Our school district does not deliver any fully online courses created in district.  We have used Virtual High School  (http://www.govhs.org) which is a wonderful collaborative of online courses taught by teachers from the VHS member schools.  Schools join VHS and part of the model is that each member school has a person in district teach a course and also a person in district who acts as the site coordinator (liason between the school district and VHS).  They offer an amazing catalog of courses and participants are from schools around the world.  If your district is not a member, I highly recommend looking into joining.  I have been teaching courses for VHS and absolutely love it.

Steve

I just took a look at VHS. Wow, that is great.  Thanks for showing that to me, Steve.  I'll have to share that with the person I was meeting with. We are both Christian schools, she was hoping to have something like that for Christian based courses I think. :)

The site led me to an article that said by 2019 half of all high school courses would be delivered online...that is an interesting statistic!  Currently about 15% of our school's total courses are online...so...kind of interesting to thing about.

What training/PD was necessary for you to begin teaching online?

I took a 2 week online training course with the U of Pheonix about 9 years ago...Now I have developed a one week online course that I teach for the teachers I hire to work for my school.

We've made some courses on Moodle, and we're using Grade Results.  We're in the beginning stages of online classes.  How did you "encourage" your teachers to write their own online curriculum?

We hire our ground teachers and/or our online teachers to write our courses. It works for us because then the department chairs are involved and the ground teachers know what is going on in the online classrooms.
