http://freeopensourcesoftware.org/index.php?title=Applications has a long list of FOSS replacements for well known commercial software. Now any student can have the same high quality software home as in school.

NATO has approved .odf, not .doc, as its official software basis since they believe in democracy (all people should have the same access to resources).

F/OSS Free/Open Source Software represents a fundamental change in what we view as quality. Used to be only commercial software was of high quality; in recent years many open source software has shown to be as good as if not better than its commercial brother. Example: Open Office replaces Microsoft Suite; Gimp replaces Photo shop.
What is your favorite OSS?
