Homeschoolers announce, "Harvard, here we come!"

How do you think top colleges such as Harvard feel about admitting potential students who have been homeschooled? Do you think they encourage it? Frown upon it? One Harvard student, a co-founder of a homeschooling group at Harvard called "Homeschoolers Anonymous" is quoted as saying:

“Homeschooling almost prepares you better for college, and especially a college like Harvard,” Hudson says. “As a homeschooler, a lot of it is kind of up to you in taking very personal…

Personal Learning Networks & connectivism in the Jewish family homeschool

As the new year approaches, it's worth re-examining one or more of the core ideas behind Room613. I have written in previous newsletters of my vision of Room613 as more than just a place where kids can take classes, but as a "virtual learning community." One system that can help create this ideal of the learning community is called the "Personal Learning Network."

Just what is a PLN? Personal Learning Networks, which have become very trendy, are described by Wikipedia as…

"Classroom bad, bus good?" Or...maybe not?

Last week, I walked through the halls of a Boston area Jewish day school. The rooms had most of their belongings filling boxes in the hall, as the rooms were probably were being readied for a fresh coat of paint. The rooms were dark, and nobody was around. A thought ran through my head, which struck me as somewhat odd as I considered it. I thought, as I peered into the empty rooms, how strange that kids are expected to come every day to these little rooms, and sit there and learn.…

Amazing technologies, Common Core Standards, and homeschooling.

I hope you had a good week. As I gear up for our two week Boot Camp program, I had the chance to participate this week in a “Boot Camp for educators,” held online by ASCD, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. The program, a webinar really, was fascinating for several reasons. First of all, it showed the power and depth of Web 2.0. (What exactly is Web 2.0, you may ask? Not everyone present at the session knew that either, although the presenter seemed to take it for…

More Than a Sport: A Look at Scootering’s Evolution

Too many people do not have a clear idea about what is a Scooter; and much less than there is a sport based on it. Besides, it is a sport that has evolved a lot from its beginning, but if you do not know too much about the sport is hard to see it as more than a kid game. However, this sport is more than just kids and young people making scooter tricks in a square; scootering is a kind of culture and a lifestyle that has more than 20 years growing to become what it is today. For this reason, we…See More
