Year Two of 1:1 in Grade One

Posted on August 5, 2014 at 12:30pm 0 Comments

Ok...so now a year has passed since my last blog on using iPads in a 1:1 grade one classroom.  I've learned a lot along the way.  I'm sorry I didn't write as I was learning, but this was a roller-coaster year of trying, failing, changing and (sometimes) succeeding... only to try, fail and sometimes succeed again.  I call it my lather, rinse, repeat process.  Now I am a week out of school and have time to share both my…

My Thoughts on Year One of 1:1 in Grade One

One of the lucky ones?

Through a grant announcement at the end of last year, I learned that I would be one of four first grade classrooms in our district to pilot a 1:1 initiative with iPads this year.    I was excited and VERY NERVOUS to…

Encouragement for Teachers New to Technology

This blog is for those of you who are just starting to get excited about the new technology you are beginning to access, but at the same time, are overwhelmed.  It's actually a message of hope so please keep reading!  It has a happy ending.

For the past two or three years I have been trying to do the "technology thing."  I'm trying to be the tech savvy educator who is keeping up with all that is becoming available to us as educators.… Continue

I-pad is the key to unlocking the door to engagement

Posted on March 16, 2012 at 6:00pm 0 Comments

I finally had the chance to use a classroom set of i-pads as a reinforcement to all of the math concepts my first graders have learned so far (see photo above). Instant feedback to children is of vital importance when it comes to reinforcing a newly-learned skill. When there is only one teacher in the room, instant…

I use it to recognize people who contribute and bring value to this PLN. It allows others to see you and recognize that you are a contributor. They can then friend and follow for a more personal connection. You have to settle for this, because I have no cash.

Self-Regulation: Getting Our Students To Care

I think all educators can agree that we want our students to become better self-regulated learners. However, this is a daunting task for teachers. I've spent a great deal of time trying to teach my grade 6 students various self-regulation skills such as planning, goal-setting, self-monitoring, time management, self-control, and reflection, but in past years it hasn't quite "taken" the way I hoped it would. I talk about how important this skills are until I'm blue in the face and I usually get…See More

A Childhood Educator Is Becoming Commonplace In Teacher Training

School boards and individual teachers are seeking out new ways to improve and maintain their own learning process. Teachers with a passion for their career are routinely discovering innovative ways to brush up on skills, and to develop new methods for delivering information. Teachers know that children have a huge capacity for retaining knowledge, and that every child has their own unique way of grasping the information delivered in the classroom. A childhood educator is an expert in childhood…See More
