Using Apps in the Classroom

http://www.nea.org/tools/51290.htm

An interesting slideshow about the top 5 apps that teachers like to use in the classroom. I had never really considered using apps in my own classroom, but now that technology plays such a large role in our students' lives, maybe it is something worth considering.

I personally liked the "Toontastic" app- it's such a fun and easy way for students to show their…

A Digital worksheet is still a worksheet.

I have read what seems like several, but in reality is probably a few blog posts recently that have claimed to have examined technology in schools and found that it has made little difference in learning. Of course many of these speak in generalities lacking specifics other than there is technology and there is a classroom and they observed stuff. When it comes to technology too many believe that by dropping it into a classroom magic happens. Even the most…

Web 2.0 Taxonomy

Educators are undoubtedly familiar with Bloom's Taxonomy and how it has impacted which activities teachers design for learning activities.Teachers are also keenly aware of how technology can impact and motivate student engagement. This graphic organizer brings the two together and gives teachers an "Easy button" when deciding which Web 2.0 tools to explore at each level of the taxonomy. As you design your lessons, consider this visual aid to help integrate technology into your day-to-day…

What is a mashup?

I am currently taking a technology class, and have just joined the PLN.  I am constantly learning new tech lingo, and now am familiar with what a mashup entails.  A combination of video, audio, or pictures makes for a very creative and innovative type of project.  It's great how it is directly tied to Blooms!  The projects can range from the simplest forms of Blooms all the way to the most challenging.

15 Education Technologies To Check out in 2013

I commented on this post, and then deleted it on accident.  Let's just say I am learning!  I thought there was some very innovative ideas here.  Lore is a social network much like Facebook, but an environment set up where students can feel comfortable and be in a professional atmosphere to interact with other students and teachers.  LessonCast is another technology resource here recommended where teachers can share their knowledge with each other.  I am looking forward to checking it out.  I…

iLearn Technology

This blog is featuring World Education Games.  This project is exactly what our technology class seems to be all about.  Students compete globally in a fun environment in core subjects.  It's described as an annual global Olympics.  I am very excited to learn more about this program.

Tool up with a digital tool belt

In an age when there is a call for education transformation and heightened drive to assess students knowledge, students need more than just paper and pencil to demonstrate what they know. Paper and pencil are the technology of the past. Unfortunately teachers still require students to use this deprecated technology to take notes, write, and more. I do agree students need to…

Global Collaboration Life 'Round Here

I chose to look at the Life 'Round Here project because it was within the age group that I teach and it was a writing and publishing activity.  The website seems very friendly and the constraints of the activity something that I could work into my classroom curricula very easily.  Life 'Round here also seemed to be something the children would enjoy as they would not only read the stories from children from other cultures and look for similarities and differences but the stories were to be…

The New Pedagogy - Learnership

In my last post I coined a term called learnership which I don't believe has been used before but came to me as a way of expressing educational leadership combined with educators needing to show learners how to learn, thus learnership.

"We cannot do things the same way." was said to me by a veteran teacher who is seeing how technology can change learning. Mind you, this has come after one foray into using the power of the Web to change student productivity and learning. She sees the…

What Box?

I just read a post by John Spencer, “Why Aren't Teachers More Innovative?“ I was struck by a comment from a reader. The comment was a question; “What box? That prompted me to think about what “the box” was that so…
