Getting Started: Connected Educator Month #CE13

"Meaningful change ain’t gonna happen for our kids if we’re not willing to invest in it for ourselves first. At the heart, it’s not about schools…it’s about us." -- Will Richardson

Many educators see Twitter, in particular, and social media, in general, as frivolous wastes of time. I mean, who really cares what Honey Boo Boo is up to? Who cares what J.T. had for breakfast? Or any other…

Common Core Questions

The test scores that came out on August 7th revealed a dramatic plunge.  The proportion of New York students who were “proficient” in English/Language Arts fell from 55.1% to 31.1%.  The percentage of students “proficient” in math fell even more, from 64.8% to 31%, according to Education Week.  This decline mirrors the results from Kentucky in 2012 when they switched to tests more oriented towards the Common Core.

Beyond Formulas: Making Math Relevant for Students

I found a great TED Talk video that detailed some of the biggest issues with classroom math instruction today and how we as teachers can work to solve these concerns. The speaker, Dan Meyeer, explained that the five biggest issues in math instruction now is that students lack initiative, lack perseverance, lack retention, have an aversion to word problems, and have an eagerness to simply know the formula.

One of my biggest takeaways from Dan's speech was accepting that…

So I accidentally blew up on Twitter last week.

National Teacher Day was May 9th, and I wanted to recognize that in a small way. I had a graphic that I created for a previous Twitter Chat, so I opened it back up, changed the top, and posted it with two small sentences and hash tagged it with #NationalTeachersDay. I tagged my usual tribe in the graphic so they would re-tweet it for me; they’re awesome like that. After that, I went about my day.…See More
