My school is a private school. That means the money to pay everything comes from the fees that we charged to the students.To say our staff is underpaid is an understatement.Here in Malaysia,it is common knowledge that private schools either charged too much or charged too little as most of everything done in school is voluntary.Needless to say, I can't afford to hire the best and the most experienced of teachers.Therefore,I opt to hire fresh but capable high school and college graduates. To my advantage, the job market is pretty thin right now.So, the candidates are aplenty despite the major issue of very low wages.However, I take pains to interview the right person as we are talking about the students' future.

 

My advantage is I have internet and my oral and written communication in English is good.I turned to the internet.Googled everything.Being resourceful have been proven advantageous to me and to my school.Jargons like teacher-leader,servant-leader,differentiated instructor and coach keep popping up. My aim is to study hands-on experience of fellow principals, not theories or rhetorics. Sick of them. Everything is beautiful on paper.How you actually execute it in the school environment is a whole chapter on its own.How you actually form teamwork amongst exhausted and underpaid teachers have to be learned.The first thing is to really assess what we can do and can"t afford to do.Whatever we can do, we will do it.Next,to determine each of our teacher's strength and weaknesses.So delegation of work has to be part obligatory and part voluntary.At first,I have to handle everything from A-Z. I purposely did that in order to gain the experience and the confidence and also the respect from my teachers.The catch was anything that they couldn't do, I'd do it.Writing about this experience now is exhaustive enough let alone doing it for a couple of years.

 

I was quite sceptical at first when I stumbled upon North American and English Educators and Administrators web sites. Could I relate to the problem solving methods and proactive methods in my school? Often times, I found answers and ways to solve my problems in school from these websites. I put them into practice and got encouraging results. Lastly, the sharing of principaling experience becomes a source of vital motivation for me to go on a daily basis.Believe that you are not alone.
