Be a “Ray of Light” when someone can’t be…The 30 Goals

Goal 1 today in The 30 Goals Challenge is to Be a Beam.

When I thought about how the idea of “being a beam” reflects in my practice, I thought of it more as a Ray of Light.

How can I be a Ray of Light for someone who needs one, especially if they don’t have the energy or ability to be the “Ray” themselves? I find this to be particularly true for many new teachers. As they are new to the practice and sometimes feeling overwhelmed, being a “Beam” can be challenging. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak…remember that saying? So to be that Ray of Light for a new teacher is very important to me.

I work with a mentee who just graduated with her BA in education. She’s presently seeking a program to be able to move forward and get her teaching credential. She came to me a few weeks back asking me all kinds of questions about what program to look for at what college. We talked it out in my home office and I could see that she was tired and overwhelmed.

After a few weeks she finally found a program to apply to and asked me to write her a letter of recommendation. It was something I was more than happy to do. It was also something that she was overwhelmingly grateful to receive. So much so, that she left me this beautiful thank you note:

That was my Be a Beam…Ray of Light moment.

Be a beam and show support for a colleague or student by the end of today! Don’t forget to reflect about the goal after you achieved it and share!

Thanks for sharing such an important message.  We often overlook the simple things we can do to make another's life easier or a little brighter.  I couldn't help but think of Carol McCloud's book, Have you filled a bucket today? Although this is a simple picture book meant for primary students, people of any age can take the message and run with it.
