California Institute of Technology, or as it is often shortened Caltech - took first place in the ranking of the world's best universities. If your goal - to study mathematics, physics, astronomy, biology, bioengineering and interdisciplinary programs, then you direct road to Caltech.

History of the California Institute of Technology has its origins in 1891, when businessman and politician Amos Throop founded Technical College in Pasadena. Institution name was called Throop University. It was only in 1920, after repeated renaming the institution was renamed the California Institute of Technology.

One of the best research centers of the University made an astronomer George Hale. He found the necessary funding for the construction of laboratories. And when everything was ready, he invited prominent scientists of that time the chemist Arthur Noyes and physicist Robert Millikan become university professors. By the way, working at Caltech, Millikan won the Nobel Prize.

Institute has expanded very rapidly, new faculties were opened. And now it is - the best university in the world, within whose walls worked and studied several Nobel laureates.

Training course at Caltech very full. The local students have in the program - five courses, not four as in most American universities. In addition, the specialty here is not divided into major and minor. The Institute is known for its mandatory program, which includes a certain amount of lectures in mathematics, physics, biology and humanities. Obligatory list also includes quite a number of hours devoted to laboratory work and dissertation writing.

The special features include the living conditions in Caltech. The fact is that the Institute offers not very typical hostel. Rather, it is the houses, each of which has its own culture, traditions, its way of life. There are eight such houses in campus. And students can choose exactly where to live. Exception - the last, at the time of construction, house in which settle in the main part of post-graduate students and professors.

Caltech mascot is the beaver. This animal is considered to be a kind of engineer of nature.

On the campus there is a cannon that shoots several times a year. When exactly? At the website of the Institute is not mentioned. There is only given advice: just be prepared!

To established tradition can be referred student's jokes, which are held not only on campus but also outside it. In addition, every year on Halloween the students throw the pumpkin, frozen in liquid nitrogen, from the roof of the Millikan Library, the tallest building on campus.
