Gossiping Teachers: Take a Stand and STOP IT!

How does it feel to have someone talk bad about you? There are two things I dislike a gossip and snakes. In my opinion, these two are related in some way or the other. A snake hides it self into spaces and can be venomous. While a gossiper does not talk to your face, but talks behind your back and injects his/her venom of lies. HRZone defines workplace gossip as a “form of informal communication among colleagues focused on the private, personal and sensitive affairs of others.”


I went to work at a new school a couple of years ago. I have never experienced such a toxic working environment. Teachers were always gossiping about each other. I told my team that I that I did not like talking about others when they are not present to contribute to the conversation. Because of my stance, I became the topic of conversations. Thus, I came up with three ways to survive and stay clear of gossip at school.


Don’t beat around the bush: When you hear gossip going on squish it by going directly to the source. If you know the truth tell it!


Be Positive: Say something positive about the person that is gossiped about.


Practice what you preach: Keep the lines of communication open so as not to give gossipers room to start a rumor.


In short, gossip is a part of today’s workplace, but as educators and professionals, we should not be back-stabbing gossipy snakes. Instead, we should thrive to build each other up by saying positive things about each other.
