The personal learning network for educators

The latest news about the termination of the entire staff of the high school in Rhode Island leads me to question why negative change is allowed and actually applauded (by public officials at least), while positive change is met with resistance.

In Tom Whitby's latest blog he wrote, "It would seem that people are demanding change to get a better Return on their Investment, but they want this without allowing any change to take place. I think that may for me be the most confusing part."

I agree with Tom wholeheartedly and honestly can't understand why positive changes such as improving schedules, updating our classrooms with technology, allowing educators to have a say in what and how to teach and eliminating test scores as a measure of student success are met with such resistance. Yet this sweeping, negative change of terminating an entire staff was met by little to no resistance it seems.

Or was it? Maybe there is no change happening there at all. Maybe the superintendant in Rhode island just pushed the reset button so that she can start over and do the same thing with a different staff. I'd love to see how student performance improves as they bring in new staff under an old system. Isn't that the definition of insanity -- to do the same thing over and over and expect a different result?

How do we get out of this vicious cycle? The present state we are seeing in education is presenting a clear contrast to what we actually desire and need in education. We have to continue to lift ourselves up to make that contrast a reality. How?

More Than a Sport: A Look at Scootering’s Evolution

Too many people do not have a clear idea about what is a Scooter; and much less than there is a sport based on it. Besides, it is a sport that has evolved a lot from its beginning, but if you do not know too much about the sport is hard to see it as more than a kid game. However, this sport is more than just kids and young people making scooter tricks in a square; scootering is a kind of culture and a lifestyle that has more than 20 years growing to become what it is today. For this reason, we…See More
