"Miss, I loved this lesson because it was so DIFFERENT!"

Amazing how much that made me swell with pride.  Thanks Corey! For my Year 9RE class I decided to try backchannelling http://todaysmeet.com/  with a wordle task http://www.wordle.net/.   As I have never used a backchannel in the classroom before, I was concerned about the ability of some students to "talk/post" inappropriate things that I couldn't delete from the space. With 31 students in the class it is tricky to monitor all traffic and who has written what. So, I decided to:

-set up 5 groups with a leader of the laptop (designated by me)

-create a http://todaysmeet.com/ room with only a 2 hour duration so no-one could add to it afterwards.

-explained that for todays activity they were to create a wordle (key terms from the New testament OR The Beatitudes) using their previous knowledge and web search, while sharing their ideas with other groups via Today's Meet.

-explain a backchannell

-ask each group to open 3 windows -one wordle, one today's meet and the other open for research for wordle task.

-demo todays meet and then wordle.

-let them go.

Was interesting to watch. Some sparked straight away and others took a back seat. They all were able to email me a copy of their wordle which I posted on our VC (virtual classroom) via scholaris. After emailing the finished product, I asked the students to talk about their impressions of the lesson on http://todaysmeet.com/.  I will post their finished word clouds and some comments in my next blog.

Overall impressions from my end:  I left the room feeling energised and happy!  I love setting goals and achieving them.

I really loved seeing the boys interact and experimenting with something new to them- all this in under 50mins! They achieved something tangible at the end of the lesson and learnt about wordle and BC. Hopefully, throughout the first semester the students enjoyed coming to RE classes- but next week I bet they will be more than eager to see what we are going to do next!

Have a great weekend! Somehow, lack of sleep isn't a problem right now.  Quite happy to investigate :)

Alcohol dependence

Alcohol dependence has become an epidemic in the 21st century. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2.45 % of men and 5.78% of women consume alcohol daily. Every year, alcohol misuse causes the deaths of 2.5 million people. The problem of alcoholism is getting commonsense, and that is scary. Almost everyone has an experience of dealing with people who suffer from alcohol misuse. The following research will show signs of the addiction and methods of its treatment…See More
