The personal learning network for educators

I admit, academic research can be overwhelming.  I have spent countless hours reviewing different research topics in my field in an effort to find my academic voice.  As an instructor, this is important.  It is important to present different types of research to support a the material being presented in class.  My students are very curious!  They want to know different resources that can help them in their research of technology.  On this site, we have discussed the reference list many times before here and here oh and here.

One way that has helped me to keep track of the tons of research I do on a daily basis is the literature review.  I have grown to complete this for my self, because there is so much information available to me.  It is nice to have a list of the resources I have found helpful and a segment on why I short listed it.

As a result, I offer the following information about the literature review.
What is the literature review? In short, the literature review contains bibliographic information about a specific article, journal, book or published research along with a short summary.  The summary includes perspective information about the article that allows the author to document important points and the intended perspectives of the original author.  For example, if you interest is healthcare, you would complete research on published healthcare topics and list them in your literature review.

What is accomplished by completing a literature review? In creating a literature review there are many accomplishments for the writer.  There is the documented list of the items that you found most prevalent.  There is the summary that allows you to know exactly what you found interesting for future reference.  This can be used in research papers, discussion posts online, or any other need for material that may arise.

How can you prepare for writing a literature review? Compile a list of articles, journals, books and research statistics that you find interesting.  Begin reading the material and developing your own opinion on the various topics.

As you can see the literature review can be helpful when used appropriately.  Particularly beneficial to those students who plan to move on to graduate level education.  The literature review will compile a list of material that you can always have on hand.
