The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

Being a teacher requires a lot of time and efforts. One has to prepare himself for the lessons, plan work, revise the students’ paperwork, and perform many other tasks. Due to this active lifestyle, they do not have an opportunity to manage their finances. And here the problems start progressing.

We all want to have luxurious life, afford things which cost a lot, go on vacations at least once a year. But, have you ever thought how to have all of that? The answer is simple – take care of your financial security. Teaching is one of those professions that offer great possibilities to choose an appropriate package on the retirement program.

Starting a teaching career with no experience can put you at risk sometimes. If an emergency case occurs, you don’t have spare money you can spend. And what do you do? You can ask your relatives or friends for help or you can turn to payday loan companies. The last choice suits more especially if you don’t want your relatives to know about your difficult financial situation. To avoid this happening in the future, here are some hints one needs to know to make financial background strong:

  1. Pay off all your credit card debts. This should be the priority thing. If you have a few credit cards, start paying off from the one that has the highest interest rates. Try to put money on it once a month with regularity. When you finish with that one, take another one and so on. But don’t close your credit cards because you will get a bed credit score which can affect your future purchases.
  2. Add up money to your savings account. Try to save money every time you can. It can be a small amount of it, but it will add up to your emergency case. For example, you will immediately need to cover your medical operation or something else so this will be a great idea.
  3. Pay off the student’s loan. If you make the regular payments, you can be entitled to loan forgiveness. It’s worth looking into.
  4. Hire a financial advisor. You are a teacher and you can’t be an expert in other fields. It is almost impossible. So it’s better to have someone who will advise you on that issue. He will examine your personal situation and choose a relevant program for you how to feel a financial freedom and be secure at retirement.
  5. Plan a budget. This will have a huge contribution to your finances. Organize your expenses and bills and wisely spend money on them. Avoid unnecessary purchases. Before buying something, consider whether it is a want or a need.
  6. Increase your economic potential. Many schools encourage the teachers to develop their knowledge by undertaking specific courses. This will increase your salary and you can save more. Through the summer vacation, there are many other ways to earn money. The summer schools provide a variety of methods for tutoring opportunities.
  7. Purchase life insurance. This isn’t obligatory but it’s better to have it. If you have someone in your family, who relies on your income, then make this step. All the financial mentors say that you don’t need to buy the whole life insurance, only buy the term life insurance.

To conclude all the above, the teachers should take the smart position towards their finances. Organizing them well will make them financially stable and they will get many opportunities at the retirement age.
