The personal learning network for educators
The collaborative classroom has 4 main characteristics, which are characteristics I hope to keep in mind when establishing my classroom environment:
- Shared knowledge among teachers and students, where teachers can share their vital knowledge and experiences about content with students while also valuing and building upon the previous knowledge, experience, language, strategies, and culture of her own students.
- Shared authority among teachers and students, where a community is established so that students can help to set specific goals within the frameworks of the lesson and provide options for activities and assignments being presented so as to capture different student interests and goals.
- Teachers as mediators, where teachers can adjust the level of information and support so as to maximize the ability for students to take responsibility for their learning.
- Heterogenous groupings of students, where teachers place their students into heterogenous groups (as opposed to segregation by ability or interests) where there is shared knowledge and authority and mediated learning, which promotes healthy interactions and dialogues among students.
