The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

I had the pleasure of presenting at the NWP Conference in Philadelphia, PA. I work with Digital Youth Network, a hybrid program aimed at developing critical literacy skills around media both in and out of school.

What is your definition of critical literacy? Why is it important to develop?

I agree 100% in regards to filtering. I think we need to focus on safety & responsibility in terms of using the internet. Besides, most of my student are adept at getting around them and there are no filters in their homes. I've had to fight to get Nings, Flickr, and Twitter unblocked @ school since they were all categorized as "social networking" and deemed unacceptable for students to access- extremely frustrating!!

excellent video. just watched it last night.
i love the focus and direction that is being taken.

one concern with filters though - seemed contrary to that purpose - in regard to the panelist and her daughter. anyone else?
i just think we can't determine filtering by whether or not a kid thinks they might stay on fb all day. i think time management and ethics is what we need to be teaching. hard to do without authenticity/availability.

I talk about how important this skills are until I'm blue in the face and I usually get…See More

Teachers know that children have a huge capacity for retaining knowledge, and that every child has their own unique way of grasping the information delivered in the classroom. A childhood educator is an expert in childhood…See More
