The personal learning network for educators

A superb 5-minute video about the practical uses of Twitter as a backchannel in a university setting. Dr. Rankin, professor of History at UT Dallas, wanted to know how to reach more students and involve more people in class discussions both in and out of the classroom. So she turned to Twitter.

Hey, Jeff. It sounds like she made heavy use of it during discussions. And it seems it was particularly useful in drawing out those that were uncomfortable about asking questions or making comments aloud. The other thing we Twitter is great for is following conversations when you're not physically present. The prof makes mention of this when she says when she was out of state, someone else was leading the discussion, and she still was able to follow it by looking at the tweets. TTYS, Jeff.

I love the idea of using Twitter in the classroom. I would be interested to know what sorts of things they were tweeting--did she ask a discussion question and then invite everyone to tweet an answer? Did she ask them to tweet summaries of their reading? What other options are there out there?
