UPDATE: Thank you everyone for replying! To get an invite, please read the thread and send a message to the person's inbox. Remember to be patient because it can take from a week to a month to receive an invite. I received mine a week after I was invited. It is not instantaneous.
Marisa shared this website to register for an invite. Do this as a back up and you should get an invite within a month.
Just be patient, because even with an invite it takes time!

I'm also still waiting for my official invitation from Google, but for now, I'll have to plead on this list! I've mentioned Wave to my students many times, but it's hard to really describe what it can do without having access to it. And there's only so many times they want to watch a video about it!
I'm hyped about the truly real-time collaboration aspects of Wave within the classroom. (Imagine what it would have been like to have Wave while you were going to university!)
